Easter Eve was another beautiful summer’s day … far too early in the year, but there we are. So we packed a picnic and headed to the moor for our lunch. We revisited a route we first discovered during the Tour of Britain last year, Merrivale. We parked at the viewpoint, along with a few dozen other cars, and set out our picnic, along with a few dozen other families …

In a photo article on the BBC website this week, it was said that when most folk visit the countryside or coast, they never venture further than 100m from their cars :o Well, we weren’t having that! So we packed up after lunch, bought our ice-cream, and started out for one of the nearby Tors … eventually we walked/climbed several of these granite outcrops …

From the viewpoint, we headed north for Cox Tor, but veered off east to the Staples Tors (several stacks together) and then walked north to Roos Tor. Looking at it on the map, I don’t suppose we covered a very great distance, but the ground at the base of the tors is very rough, strewn with great boulders of the local stone, so it took me at least, some time to get there – by which time DD1 was atop the tor and enjoying the view.

Looking north from Roos Tor, across the firing ranges and the ancient field systems – it really is as dry as it looks, our local rainfall in recent months has been as low as most deserts :(

The views are amazing … and so was the birdsong. The skylarks are nesting, and they are all around you as you walk, their song reaching for miles as they defend their nests. We saw one at ground level, mobbing another bird we didn’t recognise … I managed a very poor photo of it, just enough to identify it when we came home as a Wheatear … another species to add to our ‘life lists:D

We stopped on the way home to paddle in the river Walkham …

… but we’ll revisit it another day, perhaps when the girls are at school!
